About
Thomas Rue is a licensed mental health practitioner in New York State and is board certified as a clinical mental health counselor by the National Board for Certified Counselors. He has over 25 years of post-graduate experience providing clinical services to adults and adolescents, couples counseling, and family therapy in a variety of agency settings.
Besides individual therapy and group counseling, he has many years of experience providing written reports for use in family and criminal courts. He participated with the American Psychiatric Association, with the consent of a small number of private clients, conducting field trials in routine clinical practice for validation of the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (scheduled by the APA for release in May 2013).
Tom earned his masters degree in Counseling Services from Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey in 1985, and additional post-graduate work at the University of Iowa; with a bachelors degree, cum laude, in Psychology from the College of New Jersey. He completed additional graduate work through the University of Iowa and attends well above the required number of hours each year for continuing professional education to update and improve his professional practices. For over a decade, Tom served as education and training coordinator, and as HIPAA privacy liaison, for a 50-person staff at a local inpatient substance abuse facility, also a member of the clinical services team.
He is credentialed as an alcoholism and substance abuse counselor by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, and is approved by OASAS and the NYS Division of Motor Vehicles to conduct alcohol and substance abuse evaluations for persons arrested for or convicted of driving while intoxicated, as well as being qualified by the US Department of Transportation as a Substance Abuse Professional.
Tom is a professional member of the American Counseling Association, American Mental Health Counseling Association; New York State Mental Health Counselors Association; and the New York State Citizens’ Coalition for Children, which provides supportive services, information, and advocacy for foster and adoptive families.
Choices Mental Health Counseling, PLLC incorporated on March 1, 2011. Previously, the practice did business as Choices Counseling Services. Tom is a Notary Public in and for the State of New York, providing such services at no charge during office hours; and has also been appointed to serve as Monticello's unpaid village historian, as well as pro-bono work for local nonprofit agencies.
