About
I am honored to be invited into your life and am glad you are taking necessary steps to work through your concerns. I work best with teens, young adults, adults, and geriatric folks going through life transitions who simply need to process with someone outside of their normal family and social circles. Anyone can benefit from counseling. There is something unique about being able to share your personal thoughts and feelings in a safe space. You or your loved one will feel equally welcomed and challenged.
Finding a counselor to connect and resonate with is half of the battle when seeking therapy services. My personality is relaxed, professional, approachable, and somewhat nerdy. I enjoy underground indie rock, playing music, cooking, comic books, painting, real estate, woodworking, my family, theology, my church, & Jesus. My faith and love for Christ has shaped and molded who I am. I love traveling and meeting new people. I would consider myself an extrovert, however, I also enjoy being quiet and alone as well. Before I became a counselor, I toured the United States and Canada as the vocalist in a rock band. The times I spent touring with my band developed a special culture and community, to which I am still a part of today. In fact, an East Coast tour led me to my wife—a total serendipity. My wife and I settled in the Midwest later on. My family and I love Iowa. We could not be happier to be living and serving in the Siouxland community.
I have earned two bachelor’s degrees at the University of Sioux Falls in Theology and Fine Art (painting). After touring with my band for a number of years I went on to graduate school at Emporia State University to receive a master’s degree in Clinical Counseling and second master’s degree in Art Therapy. I am a Trauma Specialist certified in TF-CBT and am also certified in Autism Spectrum Disorders. I have been in private practice since 2018 and seeing clients since 2015 in graduate school. I have worked with a multitude of demographics and enjoy getting to know each person by hearing their story. I have interned at both inpatient and outpatient clinics and have experience in treating drug and alcohol addictions in addition to most mental health concerns.
I have worked with many different demographics and have addressed most mental health symptoms and diagnosis. I offer counseling and art therapy while specializing in Christian perspective and biblical theology. I have been trained in trauma and am comfortable navigating darker client histories such as suicide ideation, self-harm, sexuality, grief, and traumatic events.
It is important to note that Richards Counseling & Consulting is a faith-based practice specializing in Christian Counseling. I generally don't use workbooks; instead, I expect clients to bring in their own content/concerns to discuss. I would be considered a more “cognitive” therapist in the sense that we will discuss topics deeply and peel back layers. I process with my clients in a holistic, person-centered way. My ideal client is someone who is motivated to make positive change. I am very relational and look forward to getting to know clients personally. I promise to listen, empathize, hold individuals accountable, and explore solutions. Think of me as a passenger on your existential road trip!
