About

When people begin therapy with me they are usually experiencing some kind of stressful event in their lives such as relationship issues, work or school related problems, loss, or general dissatisfaction in their lives. Many have some degree of anxiety or depression and find therapy a helpful means of managing these feelings. Over the years I have assisted people in working through these issues as well as issues related to past physical and sexual abuse, and others who were coping with serious health issues such as cancer, multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. While living in New York City I also had the honor of working with 9/11 first responders and veterans who were coping with trauma, loss, PTSD and difficulty with returning to routine life and managing daily expectations.

What appeals to me most about being a psychotherapist is the realness and honesty of the conversations I have with people during our sessions. There’s no need for people to put on a strong front and pretend they’re doing better than they are when they’re in therapy, they can just be themselves and talk about what they’re struggling with most in their lives. Everyone finds life challenging or disappointing at one point or another and talking about these experiences in therapy can be very grounding and freeing for both the therapist and the client. When people enter therapy, they are engaging in one of the most meaningful endeavors in life: to learn about themselves, grow as human beings and master their experiences so that they may live with a deeper sense of joy and contentment, and maintain truly satisfying relationships with others.

In most healthcare situations patients don’t need to connect with their healthcare practitioners on a personal level in order to receive effective treatment but in psychotherapy they do. The therapist’s training and experience are vital but patients also need to feel a connection with their therapists and that the therapist’s style of working is a match for them. I approach therapy from a psychodynamic perspective and am interested in understanding the entire course of one’s development, including what a person’s significant relationships have been like throughout their lives and what their perspective is on life in general. This approach tends to be longer in nature than time-limited therapies, as a deep understanding of oneself is an ongoing process and the change that this level of awareness brings about takes time.

I have been a Clinical Psychologist for over 15 years and spent most of that time in private practice in New York City working with individual adults, couples and teenagers. I moved to Rhode Island in 2014 to become the Director of Counseling at St. George’s School and held that position for five years before returning to private practice in Newport, RI. I have a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and an M.A. in Philosophy of Religion with a focus in Buddhism, Hinduism and Taoism, and have had the benefit of training with some of today's leading modern psychoanalysts including Lewis Aron, Ph.D. and James Grotstein, M.D..
