About

Hello, all! My name is Hilary, and I serve the small mountain village of Ruidoso, NM, the Mescalero Apache Tribe, and people from all over New Mexico through in-person services and Telehealth.

In my private practice, I specialize in play therapy for children ages 3-12. I also have experience in traditional talk therapy for teens, adults, couples and families, as well as in yoga therapy, EMDR, meditation, mindfulness and creative expression. I honor multiple forms of healing, learning and communication so clients can access both what's on the surface and what's hiding underneath. Whether you or your family member suffers from anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, disconnected relationships, communication difficulties, past trauma and/or undesirable behaviors, Open Door Counseling can help. I understand that what goes on for us as individuals inevitably affects those around us, and I work to facilitate a more authentic way of being with ourselves and others.

Ever since I was young, one of the greatest joys in my life has been hearing and sharing stories. As an only child for ten years, born to teenaged parents who later divorced (twice!), I spent a lot of time with adults, books, toys and nature; my imagination, play, attention to detail and curiosity were my lifelines through a series of changes of which I had no control. Many things I witnessed were difficult to understand as a child, so after living my life unconsciously and even recklessly for years, I sought to understand what makes me who I am, and why I do what I do.

Through my adult life, I have spent my time in extensive personal therapy, teaching in the public education system, supporting my much-younger siblings, hanging around in bars, traveling, at concerts, museums and festivals, counseling in community agencies/at a tribal school, and have lived in California, Texas and New Mexico. This particular combination of life experiences involved learning from many mistakes, but more importantly allowed me to hear countless stories from people of many different backgrounds, belief systems, social classes, ethnicities and ages. It taught me a lot about myself and the human condition.

In addition to the thrills of culture, community and observation, I needed an outlet for all I had seen and heard, and a life's purpose. I decided to attend an experiential graduate school in Santa Fe, NM, and a yoga teacher training in New Orleans, LA, both focused on intense self-understanding and clinical training. Now, I am a licensed professional helping others along their personal journey. I am also a musician and an avid supporter of the arts, providing gallery space to local artists, applying for grants to assist creatives during these financially trying times, and encouraging clients to discover their preferred creative outlet in the safety of a therapeutic space.

I hope to work with you in some form soon! Please take care of yourselves and your loved ones. We can do hard things! :)
